Some Gestures

In Life Drawing One I would say I have learned best about the planes on the human body. Transforming the organic shapes of the body and turning it into geometric planes helped me to draw better. It was easier for me to visualize and draw geometric shapes first and then build/work them into the organic shape. Another visualization concept I learn to enhance is seeing the muscle and the shapes it made on the body. This helped my drawings because I was aware of the muscle and knew their basic shapes and location of how they appear on the body. I would have to say the biggest improvement I have made would be drawing facial features. I really liked how Amy broke down the face and showed how each feature was constructed. I have better a concept of the nose and eyes now, which makes a huge difference in my drawings. Some things that I still need to improve on is line work and weight, I draw with really heavy lines and sometimes I sketch with “hairy” lines. I need to soften the lines and learn how to build them up; also I should draw continuous smooth lines instead of sketchy lines that look messy. Some things I would like to learn further would be to focus on the difference in anatomy of genders. For males learn more in detail about the muscle structure and for the females learn about the significant curves. There are several areas of the genders that are very subtle in change but if drawn correctly make the drawing stand out dramatically and significantly identify the gender.

Thoughts about class and work...

So far in life drawing we have focused on the spin, rib cage, and hip alignment. I like the gradual steps were taking for drawing the human body. I think its very useful how each time we focus and only practice the placement and shape of one/each part. At first when we would just draw the single part at a time I thought it was tedious and somewhat a waste but I see now it helps me. When I do gesture or any drawings I find it so much easier to map in the parts now. My gesture drawings have improved and I’ve become faster. One thing that I think I need to do is slow down when were doing long drawings, I find myself finishing early and realize that I haven’t mapped in all the parts and when I do so some parts don’t match up. Also in long drawings I tend to focus more on the body contours then the frame work, I think its from being an industrial design due to the fact product sketching is all about contours. Another thing I want to work on is line weight; when drawing I tend to use the same line weight which is usually on the heavier side and I have to go back and (erase) tone down the lines. Over all I am enjoying class so far, one thing that keeps it interesting is that we switch off from sketches to clay, that way things to get to repetitious and boring. Working with the clay is fun but a little confusing at times, I really appreciate how “you” are more lenient with it and take the time to go around and show everyone what’s working/not working with they’re manikin. On a different note I am really looking forward to the field trip.

cross contour lines

I really enjoyed this exercise. Running lines across the body is a great way to study and draw the body and its complex shapes. I would say drawing this way comes easy to me because i'm huge on the details, and I can pick up on all the minor and subtle changes in shape. From doing this exercise i can see a huge improvement in understanding the body.

1st gesture drawings

I'm not a a big fan of 30 sec sketching, but it does get you to think fast and see the basic shapes of the body. As the exercise went on I was getting better at capturing the stance and motion. I also was understanding the proportions better.
